About me
I have always loved music and have been surrounded by its unique magic and uplifting power from a very young age. Music features heavily in my earliest memories, from banging out my first melodies on my mini-electric organ and glockenspiel (much-treasured Christmas gifts!) to singing folk songs along to my dad’s guitar at bedtime! It was always going to be a huge part of my life.
I was invited to take violin lessons at school at the age of just 6 and loved it from the first second. I went on to take lessons privately and achieved a high merit Grade 8 when examined with ABRSM at the age of 16. I am a former member of the Lancashire Youth Symphony Orchestra and greatly enjoyed touring Europe twice with this amazing county ensemble as well as participating in many concerts at venues such as Preston Guild Hall, the Bridgewater Hall and the Royal Northern College of Music. I continued to play my violin in the orchestra of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne during the whole of my time studying there. I have always enjoyed playing the violin in pit orchestras for local high school and amateur dramatic productions. I have also recently developed an interest in folk fiddle and have attended professional-led workshops to develop my knowledge of this very different genre of playing.
I started taking piano lessons at 8 years old and achieved my Grade 8 with merit at the age of 17. I have maintained a good standard of playing through continued personal endeavour and through many roles in accompanying whilst working as a primary school teacher. I am currently working towards achieving the ARSM performance diploma in piano alongside my working commitments and looking after my family.
Singing has also been a big part of my musical journey. I joined the church choir at the age of 8 which provided me with rich and varied opportunities to develop my skills in sight-reading and ensemble performance. I have been a member of the Renaissance Singers – a mixed chamber choir – based at Blackburn Cathedral for the past 10 years and perform regularly with them in concerts and services around the region.
I hold a current DBS (formerly CRB) certificate and hold music-specific public liability insurance. My company is registered with the ECO and my Privacy Document reflects the latest changes in legislation regarding the processing of data. I am a registered, active member of the European Piano Teachers' Association and in order to keep up to date with new publications and teaching methods I am a member of several online teaching forums and networks. As well as teaching music privately, I am a part-time primary school teacher and Music Subject Leader with QTS and 15 years of classroom experience. During this time I have worked as a class teacher and also as a Music specialist delivering curriculum music lessons throughout the EYFS and in Key Stages One and Two as well as providing many extra-curricular drama and music opportunities to pupils. I recently took pupils to perform at King George’s Hall as part of Blackburn Cathedral’s ‘Sing Together’ Outreach project and am keen to develop new opportunities for baby, toddler, children’s and inter-generational music-making within my local community in the near future.
Music is my passion and I aim to inspire my own children and all my students to develop a lifelong love for it too! To see my students develop their skills, expand their knowledge and become confident players of music they enjoy over time is not only extremely rewarding and a joy, but also a great privilege.
